California On Line State Approved Notary Public Study Courses
The 3 Hour course provides education required to renew a California Notary Commission. The entire process that you completed to become a Notary is repeated in order to renew your commission. The only change is that you only have to take a 3 Hour course to complete the education requirement.
It is imperative that you start and complete the renewal process to prevent a break in your commission. A NEW commission number will be issued and your Notary packet will be mailed to you approximately 1 month before your commission expires regardless of the date you completed the renewal process. The Secretary of State's office suggests that you renew 6 months prior to the expiration of your commission.
When you have finished your 3 Hours of study you will be sent a Proof Of Completion Certificate, on the same day, at no extra charge, stating that your Notary Public education has been fulfilled.
As a reminder a list of all the steps to become a Notary is on the New Notary page.
Use the STUDY AIDS and Practice Tests to help prepare you for your State Exam. Review any new Notary laws that might have occurred since your last commission was issued. In addition, the State Exam is based on the current Notary Handbook and that can be reviewed on the SOS Website in order to fully prepare you for the Exam. Or if you prefer, we can mail you a free hard copy of the 2021 Notary Public Handbook, just ask.
Your POC is valid for a period of 2 (two) years after date of issuance.
Commissions that expire May 7, 2020 through November 3, 2020 are extended for 180 days on a rolling basis. A commission that expires on November 3, 2020 will be extended until May 2, 2021.
This extension is valid provided you maintain a valid surety bond during the extension.
You must also Annotate on each notarial act the following statement "The notary commission extended pursuant to Executive Order N-63-20".
